NEW DELHI: UPA backed 72-year old Pratibha Patil became the 13th President of India on Saturday afternoon. She beat Shekhawat by a margin of 3,06,810 votes to become the first woman President of India.
She got 442 votes from the Parliament while her opponent Bhairon Singh Shekhawat managed to get only 232 votes. Patil got 325,180 votes from the state assemblies while the other contestant BS Shekhawat managed to gather only 167, 050 votes from the State Assemblies.
